When contacting Ron Garant back in March of 2002 about why he hasn't ever featured Jaco on the cover of his magazine, our conversation soon became lost in a series of Jaco stories and personal rememberences. Well since that day, Ron has dedicated an entire issue to Jaco, which I’m sure will be the best issue of Bassics to date. By the way, Ron is a genuine fan of Jaco's, and I'm confident that he will continue to keep Jaco's spirit alive within the pages of Bassics magazine. It's important to keep Jaco's legacy alive for future generations. Thanks Ron, and Happy Birthday Jaco!

The following is Ron's note...

"I had enormous pleasure in putting together this tribute issue to Jaco, for like every other bass player at the time, I was both impressed and stupefied upon hearing Jaco's eponymous release. Bobby Colomby, the producer of that record, has stated that he originally thought that bass players would be so impressed that they would hang up their basses forever, but then realized that the opposite was true -- Jaco sent everyone to the woodshed to become better players. And that's one of the most important aspects of Jaco's career -- he made us all better musicians.

This Jaco issue features some wonderful previously unpublished photos of Jaco by our staff photographer, Glen La Ferman, taken from the period of 1978-1982 and the companion CD features 9 tracks of music associated with or inspired by Jaco, including a track from Bob Bobbing's "Portrait of Jaco," Brian Bromberg's new release, "Jaco," and others such as Alain Caron, Jimmy Haslip, Michael Manring and Peter Erskine.

I hope everyone will enjoy the issue as much as we enjoyed assembling it."

Ron Garant
